  • Modders extracted an apparent DLSS 5 "Neural Rendering" file from an early-access build of NBA 2K27 and began applying it to other PC games.
  • RenoDX community members reportedly first got the unofficial tech working in Control, with videos showing altered facial detail, skin tone, and shadowing.
  • Other demonstrations showed the mod running in games including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, GTA: San Andreas, Palworld, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
  • Users testing the mod said it can sharply reduce performance, with one report saying frame rates were halved and VRAM usage spiked when switching presets.
  • Nvidia officially announced DLSS 5 in March as a system for AI-generated photoreal lighting and materials, and plans to launch it this fall.

Modders are experimenting with an unofficial version of Nvidia's DLSS 5 after code for the technology reportedly surfaced in an early-access build of NBA 2K27. Members of the RenoDX modding community extracted the neural rendering file and applied it to games including Control, GTA titles, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, Palworld, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Videos shared online show the tool changing facial detail, lighting, shadows, and textures, but testers also report major performance costs such as lower frame rates and heavier VRAM use. The experiments revive criticism that DLSS 5 can make characters look artificially enhanced, ahead of Nvidia's planned official launch this fall.
