Your sleep may be hiding an early clue to Alzheimer’s

Researchers at the University of Liège studied sleep patterns and genetic risk scores for Alzheimer’s disease in more than 500 healthy participants. In adults aged 50 to 69, more frequent nighttime micro-awakenings were associated with higher polygenic risk for Alzheimer’s, while no such link appeared in younger adults. The team also highlighted the locus coeruleus, a small brainstem region tied to wakefulness and REM sleep that may be involved very early in the disease process. The findings suggest sleep measurements could someday help identify vulnerability before symptoms appear, but they do not show that these sleep changes cause or predict Alzheimer’s in any individual.
