Electric rain can eat through metal

A Nature study found that water droplets can become electrically charged as they move across smooth surfaces. In lab tests, those charged droplets burrowed through thin protective coatings and created pits in copper beneath them. The researchers say an electric field builds between the positively charged water and negatively charged metal, eventually becoming strong enough to trigger breakdown. Scientists say the work could improve understanding of corrosion that damages infrastructure, industrial equipment and other products.
