Hypochlorous acid is a disinfectant that is more than 100 times more effective than bleach but so gentle and safe that you can spray it into your eyes. It is made in our bodies and is used by white blood cells to fight infection. It is also used in commercial and industrial cleaning contexts. However, it is not shelf-stable and can be unstable in the presence of light, air, and changes in pH. This has made it difficult to manufacture and bottle hypochlorous acid in a way that keeps it effective. As a result, it is not as widely available as other disinfectants. However, there are a growing number of companies that are working to solve this problem and make hypochlorous acid more accessible to consumers.
