Researchers discovered that gorillas in the Republic of the Congo dig for truffles, a behavior previously mistaken for insect foraging. After years of observation, it was found that the gorillas were consuming Elaphomyces labyrinthinus, a type of truffle. The study indicates that truffle-foraging strategies may be passed down within gorilla social groups, suggesting cultural food preferences. While the exact reason for eating truffles is unknown, potential medicinal benefits are considered.
