Sun blasts out 2nd X-class flare this week, triggers more radio blackouts (video)

• •Sunspot AR3738 fired off an X1.9 flare as it exited the sun's western limb on July 16, 2024.
• •The flare caused a shortwave radio blackout over mostly the Atlantic Ocean and also noted across much of Africa, Europe, and parts of North and South America.
• •NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported that there were radio signatures that indicated the flare "likely" fired off a coronal mass ejection (CME).

The sun unleashed a powerful X-class solar flare on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. The flare, which was the strongest of its kind in two weeks, triggered radio blackouts over Australia, Southeast Asia and Japan. The flare also caused a coronal mass ejection (CME), but forecasters do not anticipate Earth to be along the path for a direct impact.
