UnitedHealth CEO Steps Down 6 Months After Brian Thompson Murder

UnitedHealth's CEO, Andrew Witty, resigned citing personal reasons, six months after the murder of UnitedHealthcare's CEO, Brian Thompson. Stephen J. Hemsley, previously CEO from 2006 to 2017, replaced Witty and will continue as chairman of the board. The company also suspended its 2025 outlook, citing a focus on broadening benefit offerings and higher-than-expected medical costs for new Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. Thompson was murdered in December 2024, allegedly by Luigi Mangione, who faces charges including first-degree murder, with the U.S. Attorney General seeking the death penalty.
