Northern lights may be visible in these 18 US states Sept. 1-2

• •A potent solar storm is on its way and could put on a spectacular northern lights display for Labor Day across the U.S.
• •A fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) is expected to slam into Earth's magnetic field late on Sept. 1 into early Sept. 2 (UTC), according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
• •That makes Monday night into Tuesday morning (Sept. 1–2) the best window for aurora viewing.

A powerful solar storm, the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, is headed towards Earth and is predicted to arrive late on September 1st or early September 2nd (UTC), potentially causing a G2 (moderate) to G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm. This could produce auroras visible as far south as Illinois. The event may involve a 'cannibal CME,' where one solar eruption overtakes another, intensifying the storm. Monday night into Tuesday morning is the best time for viewing the auroras.
