General Motors is collaborating with LG to develop lithium manganese-rich (LMR) batteries for their electric trucks and SUVs. This new battery chemistry is designed to be safer, more energy-dense, and less expensive than current options, aiming to eliminate reliance on expensive and ethically questionable cobalt. GM plans to begin commercial production in the U.S. by 2028, potentially making them the first automaker to use LMR batteries at scale. The use of manganese instead of cobalt offers a pathway to lower EV costs and increased range, with the batteries expected to enable up to 400 miles of range. The cells will be produced by Ultium Cells, a joint venture between GM and LG, starting preproduction in late 2027.
