Mapping Nearby Stars Could Solve a Deep Cosmic Mystery

A recent near-complete census of stars within 65 light-years of Earth is revealing new details about the formation of stars, brown dwarfs, and rogue planets. This comprehensive survey, published in the Astrophysical Journal, involved extensive observations from both space- and ground-based telescopes. The study found approximately 3,000 stars and 600 brown dwarfs, extending our understanding of the initial mass function and challenging previous assumptions. Extrapolating these findings will help us understand how galaxies behave and evolve over time.
