China has finished the initial phase of constructing what is claimed to be the world's first underwater data center in Shanghai's Lin-gang Special Area. This project, powered by wind energy, aims to provide a sustainable solution to the rising energy demands of computing infrastructure, with a total power capacity of 24 megawatts. The underwater data center utilizes seawater for cooling, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to traditional land-based centers and achieving a PUE of no more than 1.15. The initiative aligns with China's broader strategy to advance its cloud computing industry and offers a potentially more efficient alternative to existing data center projects.
