A new study led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) highlights the crucial role of improved livestock productivity in reducing global antibiotic use. Without interventions, antibiotic use in livestock is projected to increase by 30% by 2040. However, the research suggests that strategic productivity gains could cut antibiotic use by up to 57%. The study introduces the Livestock Biomass Conversion (LBC) method to improve accuracy in estimating antibiotic use intensity, aiding in the development of effective strategies.
